Why Sweden is proud to have the world's highest taxes - BBC REEL
Sweden is famous for having some of the highest taxes in the world, and yet the country's tax agency is still one of its most trusted institutions.
The Swedish attitude towards tax contrasts sharply with many countries. We investigate what this says about Swedish society and how the popularity of the welfare state might survive growing challenges in the future.

Unlocking the principles of Scandinavian design in business
Norse Code - what a success! We knew that the 5 Scandinavian speakers chosen for their success and influence in their respective design disciplines would have something to teach, but we didn't quite anticipate the level of inspiration, stimulation and idea sharing they brought to the day.

Engaging, insightful, and business relevant - these words describe Stina’s Norse Code presentation:
As the Design Director for Volvo Construction Equipment, Stina’s presentation was always going to be high on the impact and relevance to business of industrial design – which she did, in spades. She transformed some of the more ephemeral concepts underpinning good design (like emotional capital) into tangible, customer-focused, business outcomes (ultimately increased sales) in what was a highly engaging and interactive discussion.

Norse Code - 'Unlocking the principals of Scandinavian design in business' in conjunction with Volvo was the first event of it's kind put on by us (NZSBA) and BRR. It was a full day conference held at The University of Auckland Business School featuring 50 minute keynote speeches from:
Widar Halén - Author of 'Scandinavian Design Beyond the Myth' (authority on Scandinavian design history)
Stina Nilimaa Wickström - Design Director of Volvo Construction Equipment (board member of the Swedish Industrial Design Foundation)
Monica Förster - Industrial Designer and Furniture design at Monica Förster Design Studio
Sanna Annukka - Textile designer at Sanna Annukka Design (designs for Marimekko)
Torsten Valeur - Industrial Designer at David Lewis Design (designs for Bang & Olufsen)
It was a real opportunity to compare notes with a culture that has embraced design in such a way it is now embedded in it's business practices and ingrained in the national psyche.
The day was MC'd by Brian Richards of BRR who joined the dots with thoughtful commentary. The organisation of the event and catering were top class and the timetable provided great networking opportunities for attendees. The Saturday event was kicked off with a Nordic Embassy Reception on the Friday evening, where the speakers were introduced to guests, and was again a valuable networking opportunity.
The feedback from attendees confirmed the value and insight they received and we were strongly encouraged to do it again.
"It was a fantastic, inspiring initiative and I hope one to be continued in the future! There is such great potential in our country's culture and people and events like this are exactly what is needed to nurture local design/business industries to blossom." Christina

Norse Code Presentation - Torsten Valeur
David Lewis Designers, Industrial Designer and Product Development
Designed products for clients such as Bang & Olufsen, Asus, Elica and Scholtes (kitchen appliances)
Torsten gave a fascinating presentation of his work and process with real insight into the depth of consideration he has for the user of the products he designs for David Lewis Designs. He really thinks outside the square and believes that "One chases the impossible knowing that in the end it will yield the possible". His humility comes across in his story about how much had to be persuaded to re-design a famous speaker designed 25 years ago by David Lewis whom he had a lot of respect for and had recently passed away. Torsten was very hesitant to mess with his design... but agreed in the end. The story of how he came up with the gorgeous, new, sleek design featuring natural wooden slats contrasted with precise cut aluminium was quite fascinating and insightful.
What also comes across is his perfectionism and attention to every tiny detail of the design stating "Diligence shows when all the details are solved" This approach leads to attractive, unique designs which are ultimately functional which he credits to maintaining a very close collaboration with the engineers throughout the design process. Torsten reinforced the importance stated by Monica of the ability to easily mock up the product with cheap materials to keep the process fluid. I thoroughly enjoyed his presentation as did the audience.
